Live Frequency-Domain Animation for Real-Time Vibration Insight
The EDM 12.1 release introduces Live Frequency-Domain Animation to help users visualize and interpret structural vibration data during testing.
With this enhancement, users can now observe Operational Deflection Shapes (ODS) in real time while running Random, Sine, or other data acquisition or modal tests. The feature uses frequency-domain signals to interpolate responses across the test structure, producing an intuitive, unscaled animation of how the Unit Under Test (UUT) actually moves at specific excitation frequencies.
This innovation offers immediate insight into structural behavior, including bending or torsional modes, resonance amplification, or localized response issues. Whether during a sine dwell, a random test, or multi-axis excitation, users can see the vibration mode shape evolve live helping validate test setups, identify structural anomalies, and troubleshoot on the spot.
The benefits extend across applications; from product validation and durability testing to modal correlation and troubleshooting. Instead of waiting for post-test modal analysis, users can visually confirm the dynamic response directly within the test workflow, shortening iteration cycles and improving confidence in results.
For example, in a sine resonance dwell test, the live ODS animation instantly shows whether the structure behaves as expected at resonance. If unexpected torsional coupling or out-of-phase motion appears, corrective action can be taken before proceeding further to conserve time and testing expenses.
Paired with Crystal Instruments’ advanced EDM DSA and VCS platforms, this feature bridges analysis and control, giving users a deeper, more intuitive understanding of how their test objects perform under real excitation.
Key advantages:
Real-time visualization of ODS and mode shapes
Works seamlessly across Random, Sine, and Modal tests
Enables immediate structural diagnostics and validation
Reduces post processing time and accelerates decision making
The live frequency-domain animation in EDM 12.1 represents a significant step toward a more visual, interactive, and intuitive approach to vibration testing.
